"Episcopal" simply means that we are a church governed by bishops. Members of the Episcopal Church are called "Episcopalians." The Presiding Bishop is the head of the Episcopal Church, elected to a nine-year term by the other bishops of the church and by elected lay deputies at the triennial General Convention. The democratic selection of our bishops is a legacy of both our roots in the American Revolution and in Biblical accounts of the early church.
