The service of Morning Prayer originates in the Benedictine monastic tradition as a part of what is called the "Daily Office," and it is centered around the practices of reading Scripture, reciting psalms or canticles (psalm-like songs from other sacred sources), and of course, prayer. There is also usually a sermon reflecting on the Scripture readings of the day, and hymns are sung.
This service is led by a licensed layperson using the order of service found in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (BCP) and uses the Rite II version of Morning Prayer. Rite II follows nearly the same structure as Rite I, but uses more accessible, contemporary language.
